WHY THE EPILEPTIC POWER SUPPLY? (Part 4): The Distribution Sector

THE DISTRIBUTION SECTOR

The distribution sector is the sector that is the closest to the consumers. They are responsible for ensuring that the electricity generated through the Generation companies and transmitted through the Transmission Company get to you and me.

They are the ones who customers channel all their grievances and complaints to, not knowing that they are only distributing what has been generated and transmitted to them.

 There are presently (11) eleven Distribution companies in Nigeria distribution power to different areas of the country thus;

s/n
DISTRIBUTION  COMPANIES (DISCos)
QUOTA OF LOAD GIVEN TO THEM
1
Abuja Distribution Company
11.5%
2
Benin Distribution Company
9%
3
Eko Distribution Company
11%
4
Enugu Distribution Company
9%
5
Ibadan Distribution Company
13%
6
Ikeja Distribution Company
15%
7
Jos Distribution Company
15%
8
Kaduna Distribution Company
8%
9
Kano Distribution Company
8%
10
Portharcourt Distribution Company
6.5%
11
Yola Distribution Company
11.5%

Did you see the distribution company working in your area on the table? Then look at the quota of power they get from the Transmission Company.

This means that, if Nigeria generates 3,000 megawatts, Abuja Distribution Company will get 11.5% of 3,000 which is 345 megawatts while Kano Distribution Company will get only 240 megawatts (i.e. 8% of 3,000) and so on. For these companies to be able to give constant power supply for 24 hrs, each company needs about 1,500 megawatts each to achieve this….

Now you see the reason the reason for the epileptic power supply.

The reasons for epileptic power supply in Nigeria can be summarized as follows.

  • 1.     Inability to generate much power due to the rise and fall in water levels and the activities of vandals such as Niger delta Avengers who bomb gas plants and pipelines.
  • 2.     Inability of the transmission company to transmit large amounts of power due to faulty wires, cables and other equipment.
  • 3.     Inability of distribution companies to get enough quota to ensure steady power supply in Nigeria.

I hope this blog has answered your electricity questions, stay on for more interesting topics on issues concerning you and the Economy.
